Background notes
1. I last up-dated the site in December 2007.
2. This site accompanies the two books:The Microbiology of Safe Food (2000) and The Microbiological Risk Assessment of Food (2002) books. In addition, in 1998 I wrote 'Food Hygiene, Microbiology and HACCP' with Aspen Publishers (now Kluwer Academic Publishers).
The Brazilian Portuguese version of the 'The Microbiology of Safe Food' has been released and the Spanish version came out in 2003. Meanwhile the Spanish version of my book 'Food Hygiene, Microbiology and HACCP' with Pat Hayes has been released by Acribia
3. I have started preparing the 2nd Edition of The Microbiology of Safe Food for publication in 2007. This should have been completed in 2006, but my personal research on the emgerent pathogen, Enterobacter sakazakii has taken precedence; see Food poisoning microorganisms for details. Meanwhile, I would appreciate suggestions for improving the book's content. So far my plans include:
- Microbiological media design; chromogenic, etc.
- Detergents and disinfectants
- Expand microbiological risk assessment
- Expand on individual organisms
- Food additives and food contact materials (active packaging). I plan to expand on this matter considerably since I am on the EU Food Safety Authority panel (AFC) for food additives, flavourings and materials in contact with food. This includes the evaluation of semicarbazide in jar baby foods (chemical hazard: HACCP).
Please email me (stephen.forsythe@ntu.ac.uk) with any further suggestions and I'll acknowledge you in the Preface.
4.You can go to Masters for details of relevant Masters courses on microbiology, biotechnology and bioinformatics. The Research Assessment of the Unit was Grade 5 (international recognition) and External subject review was 24 (excellent). 5. My general microbiology homepage can be found at www.theagarplate.com and my postal address is : Dr SJ Forsythe, School of Biomedical and Natural Sciences Nottingham Trent University, Clifton Lane, Nottingham, NG11 8NS, UK.
